Emergency Student Food Bank

The History:
The Students’ Association Emergency Student Food Bank was established in 1995.
It is one of over 50 food banks found on university and college campuses across Canada.
Since 2005 we have fed over 5000 people.
In 2022-2023 we prepared 638 hampers and fed 985 people – this was our busiest year to date. Previously our busiest year was 2016-2017 when we prepared 223 hampers and fed 344 people.

The Info:
The Emergency Student Food Bank provides a 10% student discount on groceries at Sobeys Village Mall, 5% off at Sobeys South, and 5% off at IGA Eastview.
Students can access regular Student Emergency Food Bank services once per term, to a maximum of twice per year, for a total of three times in their lifetime. Please note obtaining holiday assistance does not impact term, annual, or lifetime limits.

In order to access the Student Emergency Food Bank, students must

  1. Be currently enrolled in and attending Red Deer Polytechnic, and
  2. Have applied for government grants (if eligible), and
  3. Go through a pre-screening process to discuss food insecurity and current needs. Pre-screening in the Student Connect Centre (room 1102)

Eligible applicants will be provided with official approval which must be presented to the SA office along with photo ID in order to collect their items.

If You Would Like to Donate…
Donations of both monetary and unopened, non-perishable food donations are needed and very much appreciated.
Donations can be dropped off at the SA office or added to the Student Food Bank “soup cans” around campus (Soup Cans are located at The Lift, The Far Side Bar & Grill, and the Students’ Association office.)
Food donations can also be placed in the Food Bank Collection Box located by the Main Gym.
